'Geeks' target of piece, not female tech majors
I am writing in response to complaints that have been expressed verbally and on the Daily Jolt in regards to George Kroner's Jan. 15 technology column regarding how women must bridge the gender gap in the computer world. Complaints have stated that Kroner's column was "offensive to women" and that he was simply "using the Collegian to get a date." I disagree with both of these statements. As a female technology student as well as a writer, I thought that Kroner's column was well-researched and written. The column focused primarily on the history of women in the computing industry. Kroner had all of his facts right, and his main argument simply states that women, once regarded as leaders in computing, are slipping away from the field. Which is true. Women are a minority in the field, but that is a fact, one that I certainly do not take offense at. As to the second argument, that Kroner was using his column to ask for a date, I simply do not believe that. I saw Kroner's statements of "guy geeks" as simply adding a little flavor to what is, for many people, a dull subject. Let's face it, nobody is very interested in whether or not women are capable of competing in the technology industry. Readers are much more interested in some of the more common misconceptions of men in the field. If anything, Kroner was poking fun at himself. Which, in my experience, guys don't do if they're looking for a date. Jayne Litzinger
