Dlugonski gets award, named athlete of week

Penn State freshman Deidre Dlugonski was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for women's swimming. Her performances last week helped the No. 18 Nittany Lions upset No. 17 Michigan and barely miss an upset of No. 16 Northwestern.

Dlugonski has been one of Penn State's most consistent swimmers all season. This past week she dominated the competition in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. On Friday, against Michigan, she won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Saturday against Northwestern she again won both events. Both her winning times in the 100-yard freestyle were NCAA provisional marks.

As a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team, Dlugonski helped propel the relay team to a first place finish. She was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle team that swam an NCAA provisional mark against Northwestern.

Dlugonski and the Lions will return to action this week when they travel to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers and Michigan State.
