Women's indoor track unshakeable on trip

Collegian Staff Writer

The women's indoor track team is throwing its weights around -- literally.

Specifically the Lions threw the shot put and the 25-pound weight exceptionally well as they cruised past the competition in the Doug Raymond Invitational this past weekend.

Penn State found itself on the road for the first time this season at Kent State on Saturday, and avenged last year's seven-point loss to the Golden Flashes.

Penn State is 2-0 on the year thanks in large part to its success in the throwing competitions.

In both throwing events, a Lion finished first and second, contributing 36 points to the team's total of 139.5, a score good enough to beat both Kent and West Virginia by 33.5.

Freshman Kate Johnston had a huge day, setting the Penn State record in the 25-pound weight toss with a throw of 56-feet-1.75.

Teammate Ja'Nai O'Conner took first place in the shot put with a throw of 49-feet-9.25, another Penn State record.

"We have very talented throwers. Ja'Nai O'Conner did a great job, and that actually really pushed me," Johnston said.

"I think that working together and pushing each other as a team, we really work hard."

But the Lions' success was not just limited to throwing, Penn State scored in every event, finishing first in six different contests.

Connie Moore and freshman Chi-Chi Aduba were both double winners, each adding twenty points to the team's score.

Moore, who earned an NCAA automatic qualifying mark last weekend in the 60-meter dash, was victorious in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash this weekend.

Aduba leapt 19-feet-2.75 to win the long jump and took first place in the triple jump with a distance of 38-feet-11.75.

"All of the athletes are starting to compete at the level that they are expecting of themselves," head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said.

"As well as the level its going to take to be competitive throughout the rest of our season."

The team also got great performances out of freshmen Jenny Stevens and Lindsay Scottoline, who finished fourth and fifth in the 800-meters.

Kathy Messner and Jen Aylward both cleared 5-feet-4.25 in the high jump to finish second and third.

The Lions are moving through a schedule that has them compete three times in the next three weeks.

The team will be in action at home this weekend in the Penn State National Open featuring representation from over 20 teams.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday.
