'Our Town' highlights our town

Collegian Staff Writer

About 30 volunteers wielding baseball caps and camcorders will roam the streets of State College next Saturday to film the 22nd edition of WPSX-TV's Our Town series.

Developed by Greg Petersen, each episode of the show highlights the integral parts of a town.

"We try to project a day in the life of a community through the eyes of the community itself," said Patrick Mansell, a producer-director of Our Town.

Previous episodes of the show have featured DuBois, St. Marys, Punxsutawny and many other towns, but the producers of the State College show say this one is unique.

"Penn State brings an interesting element. There are sophomores and juniors (in college) who have only been in State College for a few years, so we're going to see people who are only in town to gain an education," Mansell said.

Another element that makes Our Town: State College distinctive is that it is the hometown of the producers of the show.

"We've been to a variety of communities where we're outsiders looking in," Mansell said. "In this particular case, we're all State College natives. It's a nice payoff for us to do a show about our own town."

Each volunteer attended a meeting that consisted of some general information about the show and a massive brainstorming session to outline the sites that they feel need to be included.

Laura Stimely (sophomore-mechanical engineering) will be filming the nightlife of State College for her segment of Our Town. She is planning to travel through downtown State College from Beaver Avenue to the fraternity houses to the restaurants and bars around College Avenue.

"The students constitute so much of State College," Stimely said. "Without us, it wouldn't be the same. People have been so cautious since the riots — maybe this could be good to show that we're not ripping out street posts every weekend."

David Roush (sophomore-journalism) has a special interest in filming his segment of the show.

"I did it in my own town when I was an eighth-grade student. It was a lot of fun," Roush said. He plans on covering the Creamery when he films next Saturday.

"State College has a personality and certain things contribute to that," Roush said. "I want to look into that personality."

Mike Brahosky, a State College resident, will be covering the post office and the American Philatelic Society headquarters.

Advice and tips for the volunteers of the show, which will be airing March 14, were given by another producer-director of Our Town, Craig Kauffman.

"Film the spontaneous things that you might want to see on the show," Kauffman said. "You can't look through someone's window, though."
