Hooray! For the man who busts down barriers. A guy decided that he was going to make something of his college experience. Chris Rzomp dared to make a toilet into "The Confessional."
Rzomp created it in a men's room out of two toilet stalls. Many may disagree with the concept, but the only tragedy here is the ignorance of a few.
Some anonymous hooligans who don't understand the First Amendment chose to vandalize his exhibit. They stole the original plaques and cut a hanging red light bulb twice. Are they too ignorant to realize that someone was trying to bring a bit of art into this mundane hick town?
I would give anything to break up the monotony of classes. It would thrill me to walk into a bathroom and find something other than the pungent odor of human waste.
The great beauty of art is taking the ordinary and turning it into the extraordinary. He took a toilet stall and turned it into a piece of art. It makes people stop and think.
How can one begin to learn from art and ponder its meaning if it's altered? The impact of the art may be lost completely. Shame on those thugs who vandalized that wonderful beacon of original thought in a world of conformity.
Others decided to alter history in New York City. Many have seen the patriotic photo of three firefighters raising the American flag on a 20 foot pile of rubble. In the photo, the firefighters are all Caucasians. However, it was decided that to honor all of the firefighters who were killed, the faces of the men would be altered to resemble an African-American, a Latino and a Caucasian.
This piece of art is a mockery of the facts of Sept. 11. If three different ethnicities had raised that flag, then there would be no problem.
All this will represent is political correctness run-a-muck. This statue might lead people to think that the racial makeup of the fire department is equally divided, which is not the case.
New York City is doing a disservice to the men who really raised the flag, to future generations who are going to see this statue and think of it as true, and to the ethnic groups they are trying honor in the first place.
I love this country and those of different ethnicities who live here, but if history did not happen one way, people should not try to make it seem better.
