NEWS

A water main break flooded Lot 80 last night, causing a sinkhole to open up in the Orange A parking lot. Officials towed about 20 cars away from the hole, which grew to span two parking spaces.

Absinthe, the mysterious forbidden liquor that's garnered a fabled status over the past century, has found a new refuge in State College.

After the death of a fellow student, some Penn Staters wondered what they could do to commemorate lost lives.

A recent hot topic in the news, stem cell research was also the subject for last night's 2002 Conversation at Kern Series.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently released several proposals to renovate and widen U.S. Route 322, a major route from State College to Pittsburgh, as possible solutions to the growing traffic dilemma.

Without changing ownership, Hot 107.9 WIKN-FM, formerly Wink 108, has completely altered the format of the music it plays.

While some students are preparing for the upcoming Thon canning weekend, students new to campus may find themselves wondering what Thon is.

The Africana Research Center will celebrate its opening with a reception from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Heritage Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center.

"Race Matters," a year-long exploration of racial and ethnic relationships and their impact on individuals living in the United States, will air at 7 p.m. today.

Guards Brandon Watkins and Sharif Chambliss did all they could to make up for their team's lack of an inside game, but they weren't able to save the outsized Penn State men's basketball team (5-9, 1-3 Big Ten) from suffering a blowout at the hands of Ohio State, 76-57 last night at the Value City Arena in Columbus.

Don't count on the Penn State men's volleyball team cooling off anytime soon.

How does existentialist philosophy apply to the life of Icers' forward Neal Price?

Although both the men's and women's fencing teams started their dual meet seasons a perfect 4-0 before winter break, something was missing.

Senior Nikki Bongiovanni and junior Leslie Bair were chosen by their teammates to lead the team, but while Bair will lead by example on the mat, Bongiovanni will have to give her opinion from the sideline.

When a team loses four of its five starters heading into a season, usually a balanced scoring attack is necessary to make up for the departures in order for that team to be successful.

Records in sports tend to be associated with amazing athletic feats. This weekend a record will be broken with the help of a refreshing and unusual exploit.

Many expected there would be a quarterback controversy next season, but no one expected one of those quarterbacks wouldn't be Matt Senneca.

The 20th ranked Penn State men's swimming team will take on No. 12 Michigan and the Purdue Boilermakers tomorrow and Saturday at the McCoy Natatorium.

Arts

Every so often, a performance comes around so captivating that the only thing that can be done is sit back and enjoy the show. Elton John and Billy Joel achieved this at their sold-out concert last night at The Bryce Jordan Center.

Okay, so maybe it's not the most realistic movie ever, but Orange County is good for a few laughs and even touches on some underlying themes most college students can relate to.

Certainly one of the most intriguing and ambitious compilations in recent memory, the soundtrack for I Am Sam features 17 Beatles covers by many well-known artists.

Patterson's novels always have been a little rushed. They're generally very enjoyable, but with chapters that normally hit triple digits, the books seem to be targeted to the attention-deprived.

The film has, fortunately, managed to wow audiences with its stellar acting, beautiful scenery and excellent direction from Jackson, despite its three-hour running time.

The four-disc Twin Peaks: The First Season won't fully answer that question (wait for the release of season No. 2), but several clues to Palmer's death are included on this new DVD collection.
