'Cram the Kohl' pays off as Badgers break record

Collegian Staff Writer

Records in sports tend to be associated with amazing athletic feats. This weekend a record will be broken with the help of a refreshing and unusual exploit.

Wisconsin's Kohl Center will be filled to the brim this Sunday when the Badgers tip off against Minnesota.

The sellout is due in large part to the help from Wisconsin head coach Jane Albright.

Albright is the one who came up with the "Cram the Kohl" promotion. If the game was a sellout she pledged to donate a quarter for every person in the arena to the Madison chapter of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Fans responded by purchasing every ticket that was available, allowing the Badgers to play in front of a packed house at home for the first time in their collegiate careers.

"I had gotten this idea a long time ago, sometime in the summer," Albright said. "Our seniors have just put so much into our program that I thought it would be a shame if they left without playing in front of the maximum number of people they could in a game."

The sellout will be the first at the Kohl Center for women's basketball and will break the Big Ten women's basketball single game attendance record of 16,329 currently held by the Badgers. What is so great about this sellout is that it will go toward helping people.

"It's the first for me as far as a challenge type thing," Albright said.

"I have certainly donated lots of money to lots of organizations but I have never said to people that I will give a quarter for everyone that comes."

Ken Barun, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities Worldwide, will match Albright's donation.

The donations have helped inspire what will be the third highest attendance for a women's basketball game this season.

Home Court Advantage

The Buckeyes must still be wondering what hit them.

Incase you missed it on Sunday, Purdue embarrassed Ohio State in Mackey Arena, defeating the Buckeyes by 37 points, 80-43.

The win brought Purdue's home mark this season to a perfect 8-0.

However, both of the Boilermakers' losses have come in conference road games.

Purdue head coach Kristy Curry said that there has been a major difference in her team's play at home versus the road.

"I think it just comes down to our kids seem to be in a different zone at home," Curry said. "There is a tremendous amount of pride in this building. We seem to treasure every possession at home."

The Boilermakers will have to get over their road problems if they are to beat intrastate rival Indiana today in Bloomington.

The Hoosiers have been playing good basketball of late and came close to upsetting Penn State in The Bryce Jordan Center.

"It's easy when you feel safe and secure and when you are on the road you don't feel so safe and secure," Curry said. "Our kids need to understand that anything that is worth having ain't going to come easy."

Power Conference

The Big Ten has been a women's basketball powerhouse over the past few seasons and this season has been no different.

Two teams in the conference find themselves in the top 15 in the nation and a total of five are just outside of the Top 25.

This week's Associated Press Poll has Big Ten leader Wisconsin as No. 5 while Purdue is No. 11.

Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Penn State all received votes.

The conference's strength has been felt in many ways this season and some teams with great overall records have found trouble in the Big Ten.

One of those teams, Michigan State, is 10-6 overall, but a paltry 0-5 in the conference.

"We're sort of the example to prove the strength," Spartan head coach Joanne McCallie said.

"I just think it is a wonderful conference, this year in particular. We are definitely knocking on the door and that door is going to open up. We're sure of that."
