Graphic misrepresented missing person statistics
While the frustration of the Song family about the State College community's efforts to find their daughter is undeniable, the Collegian's fear-producing article will not help the plight of missing persons. As stated in your article, 3,492 women between the ages of 22 and 29 go missing in the United States every year. Of these thousands of women, you show a map of the United States that gives the impression that only four of these 3000+ women are still missing and that all seven students went missing quite recently. Your readers should know that there have been many more than four missing women in the United States in the last year, or even the last five years since the women you show as still missing went missing as far back as 1997. Is this the recent plague you are referring to? Your article is an excellent example of how recklessly presented statistics can mislead readers and strike unfounded panic in students and parents.
