Who killed Laura Palmer?
The four-disc Twin Peaks: The First Season won't fully answer that question (wait for the release of season No. 2), but several clues to Palmer's death are included on this new DVD collection.
The first season of Twin Peaks, which aired in 1990 on ABC, captured the fancy of television viewers everywhere. The show focused on the death of Palmer, homecoming queen in a small Pacific Northwest town, and FBI Agent Dale Cooper's (Kyle MacLachlan) search for Palmer's killer.
Twin Peaks: The First Season doesn't include the show's pilot because of licensing problems, but the plethora of special features included in the box set more than makes up for that episode's absence.
The directors' commentaries, available for each episode, don't offer much in the way of new information, but there are fascinating interviews with numerous cast members and the infamous Log Lady introductions from Twin Peaks' re-airing a few years ago on Bravo.
Best of all, there's a special feature that lists every one of the show's cast members and provides biographical links of those characters to Palmer.
All told, there are enough bonuses included with this collection to keep Twin Peaks fanatics occupied forever.
But even without all of the extra goodies, Twin Peaks: The First Season would be a success because of the original episodes themselves.
Twin Peaks was instantaneously a hit Palmer's picture was on the cover of numerous magazines a decade ago but it vanished from the public spotlight almost as quickly as it took off because the show was so difficult to follow.
Fans who missed an episode or two would find themselves lost the next time they watched.
With every digitally remastered episode at their disposal, viewers can go back and see what they missed or watch episodes multiple times to find all of the secrets that series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost hid beneath the show's surface.
