Downtown nice enough; use money for students

CORRECTION: The letter contained a factual error about the amount and source of money State College received to build and clean up downtown. State College received $370,000 from property owners in the form of property assessments.
After reading about Penn State's budget freeze in the amount of $3.7 million, I was appalled to read that State College was getting $2 million from the state to build up and clean up its downtown and make it safer.

Downtown State College is one of the nicest and cleanest downtowns in the state. I do not know how this money will be used to clean up downtown because there is absolutely nothing to clean up. There are plenty of good stores everywhere, and it is very safe for as many college students that live here.

Our living area here is much better off than say our Temple, Pitt or even Indiana University of Pennsylvania counterparts.I really do not understand how this money will be used, but I think this money should be reallocated for the university to offset costs that would be otherwise passed onto the students. This would be far more appreciated by both students and parents come time for payment. It is time for the borough officials to stop trying to make some fairy godmother land where it can babysit and watch its students like some little children. Everything we need is here, and it doesn't need changed.

Its time we start allocating money in the area for more practical purposes at the university rather than these meaningless, aesthetic purposes that only serve to turn State College into a more corporate and prefabricated community.
