NEWS

Several observers have recently questioned how some open Undergraduate Student Government Senate seats have been filled, alleging that the group failed to follow its bylaws when appointing new members

This May, Charlie Schnable will bring his hobby back to State College, to 2105 N. Atherton St. where he and his old Penn State roommate Derek Duffee plan to open Otto's Pub and Brewery.

Factors other than religion must be explored to understand the half-century-long dispute between Pakistan and India over neighboring Kashmir, a territory in Southeast Asia, Penn State professors say.

Last night at the work session held by State College Borough Council, many people had the opportunity to voice their opinions on the establishment of a historic district in State College.

The Undergraduate Student Government Academic Assembly met yesterday and continued work on several joint-effort initiatives that include an academic advising Web site, an online course evaluator, further involvement in the international teaching assistant program and obtaining dual degrees.

Students can now begin the application process for federal financial aid for the 2002 to 2003 school year. To qualify for the federal aid, as well as aid from Penn State, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be done on paper or electronically.

The library tours will last 45 minutes and will begin in the Pattee Library lobby by the original Nittany Lion exhibit. Tours are scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesdays, 3 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. Thursdays. No registration is required for individuals to attend the tours.

The Lady Lions played their best game of the season thus far, defeating Big Ten preseason favorite Michigan 78-65 at The Bryce Jordan Center. It was the way the team came together as a unit that enabled it to pull away from the Wolverines.

The Penn State wrestling team jumbled its lineup at the Virginia Duals this past weekend. The Nittany Lions had to do so because two starters were out of the lineup due to suspension. Penn State decided to give other wrestlers the chance to show what they can do.

The Nittany Lions have only 11 gymnasts on their roster this season, and only nine who are able to compete at this time.

Benas placed first in the high bar and the rest of the No. 6 Penn State men's gymnastics team won the West Point Open for the fifth consecutive year with a score of 209.500. The University of Massachusetts finished second with a score of 204.000.

Natonick, who faced a barrage of 60 shots from the No. 1 ACHA Div. I Icers, had to alternate between baseball catcher, blocking the puck with any part of his body possible, and gymnast, stretching and propelling himself from side to side just to try to repel the Icers' blasts.

The No. 20 West Virginia Mountaineers have not beaten the ACHA Div. I Icers in 22 previous meetings coming into this weekend. Not only did they keep their dubious streak alive, they didn't even come close to doing anything about it.

The Penn State Ice Lions and the Kentucky Cool Cats battled into overtime twice during the weekend in ACHA Div. II ice hockey action. Penn State could not secure a victory, however, as they departed Lexington on Sunday with a tie and a loss.

In December, medfly larvae were found in a shipment of clementines, a small citrus fruit similar to tangerines, from Spain, prompting the U.S. Department of Agriculture to indefinitely ban all shipments of the fruit from Spain.

Bjornstad's findings, published in the Dec. 13 issue of Nature, describe how measles epidemics spread from densely populated areas to more rural areas in waves. The speed of this spread depends in part on the percentage of susceptible individuals in the overall population.

Maintaining the security of the United States is not limited to protecting against terrorist attacks on citizens. The agricultural industry also has to be more cautious, Penn State researchers said.

White-tailed deer and black bears, part of the precious wildlife in Pennsylvania, are growing in numbers and causing ecological and economical damage in parts of the state.
