Mazzante shatters record

Collegian Staff Writer

With a player of Kelly Mazzante's caliber on the Penn State women's basketball team's roster, it was only a matter of time before some major records began falling.

The sophomore standout became the fastest player in Big Ten history to score 1,000 career points yesterday, in a game against Michigan at The Bryce Jordan Center. The Montoursville native entered the contest needing only 15 points to join the 1,000-point club. She tallied 22 while leading the Lady Lions to a 78-65 victory over the rival Wolverines.

"It feels really good, and I couldn't have picked a better team to do it on, too," Mazzante said after the game.

The sophomore is the 14th fastest 1,000-point scorer in women's collegiate basketball history. She entered the record books in her 47th career game with the Lady Lions and is the 24th Lion to score 1,000 or more points.

"It's really huge, because I've been in the Big Ten, I've seen a lot of Penn State people get 1,000 points," Lions' head coach Rene Portland said. "It's a great moment in time for them. In Kelly's case . . . I'm glad she's only a sophomore. I'm glad she handles herself so well."

Mazzante's 1,000th and 1,001st points came on a lay-up with 13:16 remaining in the second half. Mazzante took a pass from senior Rashana Barnes under the basket and scored through the backdoor over a Michigan defender. The game was paused as Mazzante hugged Barnes and her fellow teammates, and a banner was unfurled along the baseline congratulating Mazzante on the milestone.

"It means a lot to me personally, getting to see history," Barnes said. "And plus I gave her the assist."

Mazzante finished the game shooting 6-for-17 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Her 22 points led all scorers, marking the 14th time in 18 games this year she has done so.

"I think obviously she's a very, very prolific scorer," Michigan head coach Sue Guevara said of Mazzante. "There's a reason the kid already has 1,000 points, she's already through her sophomore year. She can score in a variety of ways."

Although she is in just her second season, Portland has relied on Mazzante not only for scoring, but for team leadership as well. Mazzante was named as a team captain before the start of the season and has already made a name for herself on a national scale.

"She's in our record book, but she's put Penn State as a school next to her name in some major record books," Portland said.

Mazzante said that although she is glad to be a part of history, the celebration will be short-lived.

"I don't have time to think about stuff like this right now," Mazzante said. "We have a week off and we're right back on the road. I'm glad I did it at home, I'm glad I got to enjoy it, and now its time to refocus and start winning some games."
