Letter to the Editor
Service unsupportive during time of need

In response to the article on Friday "PSU deaths, Sept. 11, affect students" regarding the deaths of Penn State students this year, I am appalled at the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and the actions they have taken for students in need of their services. They state that they are "ready to provide support to any student who may need it, especially grief counseling."

However, after the recent death of my childhood friend and roommate, Shellie Smarowsky, I became very angry and depressed.

I was fortunate to have my family and friends there to support me, but it was not enough at the time. I then turned to CAPS to discuss how I felt with a professional.

Despite the fact that I called them crying and asked for someone to talk to immediately regarding my depression, I was turned away.

The women said she was sorry to hear about my friend, but there was no one there to help me since it was so late into the semester. She said that they could give me an appointment later that week, but that was no help to my condition at the time.

I then turned to the Eisenhower Chapel, where I found immediate help. They helped me through my grieving process and were able to give me answers for which I was searching. I am thankful for the reverend who spoke with me, as well as his secretary, for all their support and generosity.

I am saddened by the fact that CAPS claims that there are always counseling services available to students, yet I was turned away when I needed a professional to talk to the most.
