USG senators need to avoid partisan politics
I am writing in reference to the recent article about the USG Senate's decision to grant money to the College Republicans for a trip to the Conservative Political Action Conference. This is a prime example of the type of thing a student government should never do. During my time in USG, senators made a point of avoiding partisan politics. They simply are not relevant to the number one task at hand, which is to be an advocate of the students on campus. The student government should not be spending money to train students to be active participants in a political movement, especially when that movement provides no benefit to the student body. They should be examining campus issues that matter to students, and working with the administration to make student life better. Funds should be used to enrich the Penn State experience for the maximum number of students, not to facilitate grassroots conservative activism. Enough already with this political crap in USG. That's not what it is about. USG is about service to the students of Penn State. I If this is how the senate is going to spend USG's money, I suggest President Justin Zartman dissolve the position of USG Business Director, and stop raising the money that the senate spends. Let other student groups run the big USG fund-raisers and let them have all of the profits directly, then you can all ignore the senate, and the university will be better for it. Matt Roan
Former USG President
