Penn State community members who feel they have been the victims of intolerance now can turn to the Zero Tolerance for Hate Support Network for assistance

Starting Monday, Penn State will limit the number of gigabytes on-campus students may download from online sources outside of the university's domain.

Many State College area businesses have yet to feel the pinch from the nation's first burgeoning recession in nearly 10 years.

State College Borough Council will discuss establishing a historical district in State College during its meeting Monday night.

State College may live up to its nickname "Happy Valley" now more than ever due to a recent national ranking of the country's safest metropolitan areas. According to recently released rankings, State College placed eighth out of 254, as the safest metropolitan area to live.

In an effort to give students better representation in town decisions, the Undergraduate Student Government Senate's Town Caucus has been meeting to lobby for student appointments to the State College Borough Council boards.

All season long, sophomore Kelly Mazzante has been the driving force of the Penn State women's basketball team. Last night wasn't much different, as the nation's leading scorer smoked Indiana for 36 points en route to a 62-57 Lady Lion win at The Bryce Jordan Center.

When the team takes the floor at 7 tonight in Gainesville, Fla. at the SEC Challenge, they will be aiming to reverse their misfortune of last year, and to prove their readiness and fitness early in the season.

The saying from the Wizard of Oz, "there's no place like home," is a perfect simile for junior Kevin Donohue as he, and the men's gymnastics team, competes in the West Point Open today and tomorrow.

Junior Nate Wachter and sophomore Scott Moore, starters at 149 and 141, respectively, will stay home this weekend after missing a practice earlier in the week.

The No. 1 Icers (15-1-1) will host the Mountaineers (12-9-1) tonight at 9 and tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. If a four-week layoff did not stop the ACHA Div. I Icers last weekend, it does not look good for this weekend' opponent -- the No. 20 West Virginia Mountaineers.

It's expected to be a big year for the Penn State men's volleyball team. Perhaps what could be the first championship season since 1994 is set to begin for the Nittany Lions as they travel to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes at 7 p.m. tonight.

Coming off three consecutive victories over Western Michigan, Michigan State and most recently University of Buffalo, the Lady Icers seemed to be finding their groove after an early season of ups and downs. But when Pittsburgh comes to town Saturday at 10:15 p.m. at the Greenberg Sports Complex, the Lady Icers will begin a new journey.

The Penn State Men's indoor track and field team start their season at home, in the Multi-Sports Complex with the US Coaches Series event at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday.

The Penn State Div. II men's ice hockey team, the Ice Lions, will venture south today to face the Kentucky Cool Cats at the Lexington Ice Center.

Kathi Bennett thought her team played well enough to win last night. She also felt that the reason her team did not come away with the win was the play of Penn State sophomore guard Kelly Mazzante.

Penn State sophomore guard Kelly Mazzante has been named December's National Player of the Month by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Mazzante, the nation's leading scorer at 26.3 points per game, went on an eight game stretch during December when she averaged 30.5 points per game.

Arts

Two pianos, one show - and maybe a few funny-looking sunglasses. Billy Joel and Elton John will make their way at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to The Bryce Jordan Center for their Face-to-Face tour.

The cheapest tickets available for the Billy Joel and Elton John concert? $47.50. The most expensive? $184. A chance to spend up to four hours with two legendary performers? Priceless.

One serious problem concerns the inability of students living in residence halls to successfully dry their hands after bathroom usage due to a lack of drying equipment.

Dancing About Architecture. What? The former title of Playing by Heart seems to make no sense, until one hears the opening lines of the movie. Similarly, the plot also does not configure well unless one watches the entire film.

VanDance, a central Pennsylvania modern dance group, performs The Raven ... and Other Mysterious Tales at 8 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at the State College VFW Hall, 139 N. Barnard St.

It seems there are always great bands that are massively influential and critically praised, yet remarkably their album sales and celebrity remain miniscule: The Replacements was such a band.

Only one book defined the collapse of the 1960s drug generation with that certain panache that the author dubbed "gonzo-journalism": Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson.

It may not be time to celebrate Mardi Gras just yet, but a local restaurant, Spats Café & Speakeasy, 142 E. College Ave offers its guests the New Orleans atmosphere and taste year round.

Kim Cook, associate professor of music in cello, is hoping to create a tradition as she is finishing the final touches to get ready for Penn State's second Cello Festival taking place this weekend in the Esber Recital Hall.

Blizard and Nassar both have mammoth record collections. Those collections are necessary -- the duo hosts the Crossfaded Show from 9 to 11 p.m. each Thursday on WKPS-FM (90.7), on which the DJs "spin breaks and grooves and hip-hop," Nassar said.

With the statement, "We respectfully request that people who do not have an open mind do not attend this performance," Penn State students can expect the unexpected when alumni Caeser Pink and The Imperial Orgy perform at 9:30 p.m. tomorrow at Café 210 West, 210 W. College Ave.

The cast is indeed A-list in looks as well as talent, and the small paychecks seemed not to matter as the camaraderie and good will of the group came through on screen. Ocean's 11 is fun -- that's the bottom line.

Disastrous misjudgments, lost lives and ruined dreams. Not really the stuff Broadway's made of ...Titanic -- The Musical takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Eisenhower Auditorium as part of its National Tour 2001-2002.

Roofs be raising in Rec Hall on Sunday night, when critically acclaimed producer, musician and rapper the mighty Mos Def drops hip-hop on Happy Valley

My Opinion:Gretchen Gailey

Music fans can get a taste of classical style this weekend in State College, when the Vermeer Quartet performs at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in Schwab Auditorium. The program is slated to include works from Beethoven, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn

Janet Jackson will appear at 8 p.m. on Feb. 1 at The Bryce Jordan Center with Ginuwine as part of her All For You Tour . Reserved tickets are priced at $35.50, $45.50, and $58 and will go on sale beginning 10 a.m. tomorrow at The Bryce Jordan Ticket Center, Eisenhower Auditorium, select Uni-Marts, Commonwealth Campus ticket outlets or charge by phone at 814-865-5555, or 800-863-3336. Tickets are also available online at www.bjc.psu.edu.

Weezer's Hyper Extended Midget Tour will reach Penn State at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at The Bryce Jordan Center. Weezer will be accompanied by special guest Saves The Day.

VanDance, a central Pennsylvania modern dance group, performs The Raven ... and Other Mysterious Tales at 8 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at the State College VFW Hall, 139 N. Barnard St.

Under the direction of Jill Brighton, the Fraser Street Dancers will hold their spring audition at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Central Pennsylvania Dance Workshop, 101 S. Fraser St.
