USG must work for students, not selves
After reading Thursday's article, "USG funds Republican trip", I was convinced, more than ever, that the some of our senators act in their own best interest, rather than that of the student body. Rather than funding programs that benefit hundreds or thousands of students, such as "rape cards" or Pride Week events, the senate chose to fund the College Republicans' trip. Not only does the program reach a smaller number of students, but also a majority of the senate would be likely to benefit from the funding. I was also angered to read that Sen. Holloway took an event, such as Pride Week, which seeks to eliminate hate and intolerance through education and celebration, and turned it into a simple poetry reading and rally. I would assume Sen. Holloway has previously attended a Pride Week event; since, in order to make a comment of that nature, I would expect one to have educated himself about the subject at hand. I find it hard to believe that someone who is supposed to represent the student population could make a comment about how one program is more educational than another, especially when he hasn't taken the time or effort to back up such a statement. I do not totally disagree with everything the senator stated within the article, however. If there is one thing I couldn't agree with more after reading this article, it is that there is a desperate need for better leadership skills within the senate. Rob Beck
