Penn State's Christie Welsh was one of 11 players named Soccer America's College Women's MVP which was announced on Tuesday. It is the third time in her career that she has received the honor.
Welsh won the prestigious Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation's top collegiate women's soccer player, in December. She was also named the Missouri Athletic Club's Women's Collegiate Soccer Player of the Year, the official Division I player of the year award of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She became the first-ever Nittany Lion and Big Ten women's soccer player to earn either award.
Besides becoming the first-ever Big Ten women's soccer player to be selected the conference's Player of the Year three-consecutive years, Welsh was also picked first team NSCAA All-America for the third time and was a Honda Sports Award finalist for the second-straight year.
The most decorated player in Penn State women's soccer history, Welsh enjoyed another outstanding season scoring 25 goals while adding 18 assists in 26 games, helping the Nittany Lions reach their fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament quarterfinal. Penn State also won its fourth Big Ten regular season title in a row and third league tournament crown in the last four years.
In just three years, Welsh has broken almost every Penn State and Big Ten career offensive record, including goals (69), assists (39), points (177) and game-winning-goals (22). This year, she led the Big Ten in every offensive category.
Welsh ended the season ranked third in the nation at 2.62 points per game, fourth at 0.96 goals per game and tenth with 0.69 assists. She needs just one assist to join the NCAA's 40-goals, 40-assists club, a list which includes just 28 players all-time. Currently, she is tied for 23rd in the NCAA in career goals.
