A new semester brings a new opportunity for the current Undergraduate Student Government administration to make the rest of its campaign goals a reality.
So far, under the leadership of USG President Justin Zartman and Vice President Amanda Hudnall, the organization has made substantial progress in three areas: making housing easier to find, promoting diversity within the community and helping students get Exercise and Sport Activities credits for attending recreational sports classes.
While their fourth campaign goal, a late-night shuttle that runs from downtown back to campus and the outlying townships, has not yet come to fruition, Zartman has discussed the issue with university administrators in hopes of enacting the program on a trial basis later this semester.
We're confident they'll come through with these promises.
The spring semester also gives USG Senate members the opportunity to redeem themselves after a controversial semester full of censors, controversy, condemnations and resignations.
The most worthwhile thing senators did this semester was work with the State College Borough Council and pass a September resolution that opposed a council plan to install cameras on apartment balconies.
Last month, Sean Clark, the senate president, promised to issue a report he did on Penn State's Office of Judicial Affairs. If he follows through on his word, the findings may be interesting and shed some more light on the unviersity's often-criticized disciplinary policies.
Hopefully, the senators will stop bickering among themselves and criticizing everyone else's work and work to better the student body as a whole this semester.
If they can do that, we're also hopeful good things will come from their work.
We also believe the Academy Assembly will continue their fine work this semester, building on the accomplishments of the fall such as establishing an e-mail address, concerns@psu.edu, to answer student questions. The group also sought input on how to present student opinions about changes to the academic calendar to the faculty.
Many people often view the spring season as a time of growth and renewal. With some work, motivation and togetherness, all of USG's branches have the opportunity to begin anew and grow as an organization this spring.
