NEWS

Whether by ground or by air, students attempting to return to Penn State yesterday faced the first winter storm of the new year.

During winter break, there were no new leads found in Song's case, however, police are now approaching the case as a possible abduction.

But with the backing of faculty in the College of Communications, Smarowsky was awarded a posthumous bachelor's degree during the fall commencement ceremonies, less than two weeks after her death.

As many return from winter break, those needing to pay parking tickets, seek police help or attend a State College Borough Council meeting will need to walk a few more blocks. The new municipal building, located on the 200 block of South Allen Street, opened while students were away.

After students left for winter break, Centre County Judge Tom Kistler upheld his sentencing of a former Penn State wrestler convicted of sexual assault and a former PSU employee who embezzled nearly $380,000 from the university, despite concerns from District Attorney Ray Gricar.

With a recent $650,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the World Campus will be able to expand its services for students such as Downs who take courses from Penn State online.

Mumia Abu-Jamal, the man who has sat on death row for almost 20 years while activists argued for and against his release, had his sentence overturned in December.

Linkin Park will rock The Bryce Jordan Center at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 as part of the Projekt Revolution Tour.

After redshirting last year, and battling injuries and teammates for lineup spots this season, the Woodall twins, Jason and James, finally made their varsity debuts for the Penn State wrestling team this past weekend.

Losing is never a happy experience, but just imagine multiplying that feeling times three. This is the state the No. 17 Penn State wrestling team finds itself in today.

Unfortunately, the Lions were never able to get in tune courtesy of Vanderbilt's defense and dominating center Chantelle Anderson. As a result, the Penn State women's basketball team (9-6) was left scrounging for a music city miracle at the end of its 77-62 loss to No. 6 Vanderbilt (13-3) at Memorial Gym.

State College in January can sometimes be a very bleak place and practice can be just as dreary. So what better way to improve a teams mood than to pack up and head south.

It's not too often a team wins a game when it endures a nearly eight-minute stretch without scoring a point.

Replacing NCAA women's scoring record holder Jackie Stiles was no easy task but then again, neither were the other things she has accomplished in the last month.

After their 6-0 domination against the Freeze, tensions reached a boiling point in an evening filled with checks, elbows and near fights.

After getting blown out at Pittsburgh on Dec. 8, 83-53, and losing to James Madison at home 85-69, the Nittany Lions began to turn things around. They did so with a 78-57 win at home over Bucknell and a 66-49 victory over Coppin State in the first round of the Golden Bear Classic in Berkeley, Calif.

Rust. It's what hockey players want to avoid after a long layoff between games.
