Letter to the Editor
Borough music scene needs to be revamped

The State College music scene is filled by almost entirely cover bands, some of which may play a few mediocre, original tunes. I personally am sick of hearing the same cover songs played by different cover bands, which in the end all sound the same.

People argue that it's the scene's fault that original music is basically nonexistent in State College, which is partly true. The main fault lies in the clubs and venues for not booking all original talent.

I play in a hard rock/metal non-cover band. I know what its like to sometimes perform for only your friends, a few random people and the other bands who are on the same bill. That's the road less traveled in this day and age for originality, but it's the most fulfilling.

Back in Philadelphia where my band is based, almost every night of the week there is a club or venue that hosts original music exclusively If you play a cover song your band is blacklisted. Local radio stations and record labels sponsor these events.

I would like to see something similar to that happen in State College sponsored by a radio station perhaps that supports original music.

I don't see why something like this could not happen here at least one night a week. Have hard music at the Crowbar, the following week have rock music at Cafe 210 and have folk rock at the Saloon. All you need is three bands or so a night t o perform an hour set at each venue, and a sponsor.
