Abortions will happen whether legal or not
Brain Blase's column on abortion Tuesday completely missed a major point in the pro-choice argument. He wrongfully assumed that pro-choicers see the abortion issue as a matter of life or death. To many, asking if the fetus is the equivalent of a human life is irrelevant to the abortion issue. The real aspect concerning this topic is the fact that women will conduct abortions regardless of legal consequences. To think otherwise is naïve and foolish. Few people practice a doctrine of premarital celibacy and many people engage in irresponsible behavior, especially in their youth. Pregnancy can be exceptionally challenging during one's youth, when they are struggling with school or an early career. Because of this, women are faced with the choice of whether to abort their pregnancy. Many will choose to abort, and if there are no medical venues open to facilitate this choice, they will take matters into their own hands. In the eyes of a pro-choicer, the hands of a doctor in an abortion clinic are much better suited to the task than a coat hanger in an alley. Obviously the survival rate of the later is questionable. Are pro-lifers prepared to see the deaths of countless young women who attempted a self-abortion. Is this the moral high ground that Mr. Blase was speaking about? Of course the option to put the baby up for adoption exists. Besides the fact that this does nothing to alleviate the trials of a pregnant woman trying to get ahead in society, it also means a hard life for the baby. To all who promote adoption as an alternative to abortion I say do your part. Adopt a child into your life. Those who support adoption without the willingness to adopt a child themselves are hypocrites. Rob Weaver
