New Year's resolution for student senators

Collegian's editorial opinion is determined by its Board of Opinion, with the editor holding final responsibility.

On Tuesday night the Undergraduate Student Government Senate passed a resolution condemning The Daily Collegian for an editorial that appeared in Monday's issue. In the editorial, we criticized the senate's decision not to provide funding to Pride Week, a series of educational events that disseminate information about the gay community.

The senate protested the last paragraph of the editorial, which called its actions homophobic before formally condemning the Collegian.

For many of Penn State's students, the coming months mark a holiday season, and there is, at least, a spirit of giving just about everywhere. So, in that spirit, the Collegian's Board of Opinion sat down and decided to put themselves in senate's shoes for one of our own meetings, in the hopes of finishing the afternoon with something to give to senate in return.

After two hours of pointless bickering over who had the pen best equipped for drafting our next editorial, we finally voted to vote on voting on whether to run this piece. Once we'd made it through that ordeal and actually had it on the table and then passed it, the editor in chief vetoed the editorial. The board, however, decided that it would band together and overturn her decision.

Before we present our editorial, we want to thank Mike Fazio for his four years of service to Penn State students. Until senators ousted Fazio from his position as Town Caucus chair Tuesday night, he had always taken a stand for what he believed his constituents wanted. His dedication to the students of Penn State and to his job are commendable, and the fact that senate removed him tells students how much USG senators understand that kind of service.

And now, here's our gift to USG Senate:

Whereas: USG Senate provides a forum for student concerns to be heard and acted upon in the university.

Whereas: USG Senate has spent the fall semester condemning, refusing to fund, censoring (note: not censuring) or deposing nearly every person, organization and program who or that has disagreed with the radically close-minded views of the "conservative coalition" in the senate.

Whereas: The senate has accomplished nothing in the way of positive action for its constituents, the students of Penn State University, during the course of the fall semester.

Be it resolved: The Daily Collegian's Board of Opinion formally condemns the "dastardly" actions of the USG Senate/conservative coalition in accomplishing nothing for the benefit of Penn State students.

Be it further resolved: The Collegian Board of opinion expresses its sincere hope that USG Senators adhere next semester to the wishes of the Penn State students to make this school a better place for all of its students. This includes students of all political backgrounds, genders, races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations and more open-minded Penn State students in general.

We don't want to entirely bashsenate, though. We loved the use of the word "dastardly" in its resolution.
