Dave Matthews saw something in a folk-pop English singer named David Gray.
He signed him to his record label and saw the singer's success spread across the sea last year when his album White Ladder went platinum and the song "Babylon" ruled the airwaves. The song was refreshing and fun and probably the year's best single. Gray is now a respected singer, guitarist, writer and part of the "It" list.
However, even with his success, Gray is still very underrated and his previous albums have gone almost unnoticed in the U.S.
Fortunately Gray's new fans discovered more of his artistry when he released a collection of never-before heard material in 2001. Recorded in London at the end of 1999, the CD Lost Songs is a promising compilation of Gray's talent and diversity as a singer-songwriter. The tracks are like night and day, each one with a different tone and melody.
"Twilight" plays like a lullaby, but Gray's voice is probably far more pleasant than your mother's. The soft melody will rock you to sleep for a long winter's nap.
Because of its strong lyrics, "If Your Love is Real" is quite possibly the best song on the album. The singer's charming request for love will leave a listener with a light heart. Gray's songwriting skills shine through the song's universal theme.
Gray blends his culture and background into "Tidal Wave," which ends up as the most refreshing track of all with its non-American sound.
Proving the singer's diversity as a musician is "January Rain," an instrumental track. It is simple and pure, and leaves you desiring to hear more of its kind. A completely instrumental album would sell for Gray, although his voice also delivers satisfaction.
Imagine the sweet sound of a jewelry box with its melodious tune. It is just like that of "Wurlitzer," the last song on the CD. In addition to his other musical talents, Gray plays the wurlitzer, a rare instrument, and displays this respectively on the track.
Gray deserves far more attention than that which he shortly received. He radiates his compassion for music, something few artists do in the greedy industry.
Lost Songs is beyond really worth hearing. In fact, it is a must-hear gem. Just remember how good "Babylon" had you feeling with its catchy rhythm. Luckily there is plenty more where that came from, so if you want it, come and get it!
