The most wonderful time to spend
The holidays aren't just about fun -- they're also about finding the perfect gift

Having trouble coming up with the right gift ideas for friends or family this holiday season? Looking for something to ask Santa for but unsure of what's out there? Here are a few ideas for everyone as you're shopping around the mall near midnight on Christmas Eve.

Movies

  • Moulin Rouge

Baz Luhrmann's overlooked critical hit is a perfect choice for any artsy or musical film lover. Set in turn-of-the-20th-century France, the tragic yet humorous musical tells the tale of a young playwright (Ewan McGregor) and the courtesan (Nicole Kidman) with whom he falls in love. Packaged in a two-DVD set, Moulin Rouge features deleted scenes, documentaries and music videos.

  • The Simpsons: The Complete First Season

A no-brainer for any fan of the immensely popular animated series, the DVD package crams all 13 first-season episodes onto three discs. To top it off, the set sells for only $30 making 394 minutes worth of The Simpsons quite affordable.

  • Shrek

The year's largest grossing film has now come to DVD and video in time for the holidays. The amazingly animated film tells the tale of Shrek, an ogre who lives in a fairy tale land and falls in love with a princess. However, this movie is far from a cliché; rather, it makes fun of almost every fairy tale that one can think of. Including the voices of Mike Myers, John Lithgow, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy, the movie contains humor for all maturity levels. Those who purchase the DVD will also get deleted scenes, music videos and fake outtakes.

    Music

  • Greatest Hits Galore

This holiday season has seen the release of a plethora of albums containing artists' greatest hits. Rock fans can get their hands on Green Day's International Superhits!, Smashing Pumpkins' Greatest Hits, Barenaked Ladies' Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits 1991-2001, and Aerosmith's Young Lust: The Aerosmith Anthology. For those with more of an old-school rock taste, Billy Joel, the Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, and the Cure have all released greatest hits albums as well. Finally, Madonna and the Backstreet Boys have both released collections of their hits for the pop crowd.

  • Mick Jagger's Goddess in the Doorway

Looking for something new but by a classic artist? Try Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger's new solo album, Goddess in the Doorway. Marking his first solo album since 1993, Goddess received Rolling Stone's (the magazine, not the band) extremely rare five-star award for an album.

  • Michael Jackson's Invincible

The King of Pop's first album in four years has proven to be a commercial success, debuting at No. 1 in the charts in 13 countries. His latest single, "Butterflies," can be heard on the radio now. Fans of Jackson will also want to check out his re-release of Vol. 1 of his greatest hits album, Vol. 1 - Greatest Hits History.

    Gadgets

  • Rio Volt SP90

For any owner of a CD burner on his or her computer, look no further than the Rio Volt SP90. This Discman has the ability to read MP3 files burnt onto any CD from a computer's burner. Since one CD can hold dozens of MP3s, this means one can listen to hours and hours of music all on one disc. At $100, the SP90 is a smarter buy than other MP3 players because not only is it more affordable than most, but most other players can't beat the storage capabilities either.

  • P@L Mate Mini PDA

Want to find a personal directory device for Christmas but don't want to spend the cash on an expensive palm device? Try the P@L Mate. This extremely tiny gadget has many useful features found on palm devices but for only $30. Not only can it store dozens of friends' names and addresses, it also features an alarm clock, calculator, to-do list, and multiple built-in games. (See www.gadgetuniverse.com for more info).

  • Q

Are you an information junkie who spends a lot of time carting files around that are too big for a floppy disk but a waste to burn onto a CD? Agate Technologies has an innovative product that they call Q -- a tiny universal serial bus hard drive that's small enough to attach to your key chain. Just plug it into the USB port on your computer and transport 16, 32 or 64 megabytes of data (depending on which model you buy). (See www.agatetech.com for more info).

    Video Games

  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Playstation 2)

One of the most anticipated games of the year, MGS2 has already flown off the shelves at retail stores, selling over 1.8 million copies so far. The sequel to 1998's immensely popular Playstation title Metal Gear Solid, the PS2 sequel is predicted to be this holiday's highest selling game.

  • Super Smash Bros. Melee (Gamecube)

A remake of 1999's Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64, SSBM offers the same fast-paced fighting action as its predecessor. A game that allows players to pit classic Nintendo characters against each other, SSBM is great when one has a few people over in the dorm room with nothing to do.

  • Halo (Xbox)

For fans of first-person shooters, look no further than Halo for the Xbox. Taking place on an artificial ring-like structure in space, Halo is a shooter unlike any of its kind, with a more realistic physics engine and use of graphical dust particles so when players blow up terrain, it actually destroys the land.
