It's the season for long lines, holiday music and that one person who's impossible to find a gift for. There are, however, many popular gift items this season that might be ideal for that person.
The Microsoft Xbox is one of the most popular gifts this holiday season, said Chad DiGennaro, the sales manager for Best Buy, 1650 N. Atherton St. The X-Box is a game system that also can be used as a DVD or CD player. It has its own hard drive, so no memory card is required to save player information.
Similar to the X-Box, the Nintendo GameCube is another popular gift for someone who's looking for a video game system, DiGennaro said. The GameCube is Nintendo's first game system that uses CDs instead of cartridges.
Both the GameCube and the X-Box may be hard to locate, however, DiGennaro said.
"We can't keep them on the shelf," he added. "If you're not here the day they come out, you're probably not going to see one."
Warm winter wear also is a popular holiday gift, said Nicole Houze, manager of Metro, 324 E. College Ave. Many different types of sweaters are popular, especially long sweaters, Houze said.
"The warmer, the better," she added.
As far as jewelry goes, horseshoe necklaces are what is selling for the holiday season, Houze said. Earring and rings, in general, also are very popular presents, she said.
The Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave., has many different novelty items for the holidays, said manager Norm Brown. Some of the most popular items include Penn State afghans, clothing and various Joe Paterno merchandise, Brown said.
The most popular gift items for the holidays are Penn State tree ornaments, he said. The ornaments are "pretty well cleaned out by the time (students) leave after finals," Brown added.
For more personal gifts, 2000 Degrees, 202 W. College Ave, is the place to shop, said Manager Gary Filkins. For the holidays, the store has various ornaments, as well as menorahs, dreidles, Christmas trees and snowmen plates, Filkins said.
"We have 300 different things to choose from and on top of that, you get to personalize it yourself," he said. "We're different from other stores that sell the same things from year to year."
Other popular items at 2000 Degrees include picture frames, food dishes for animals, sushi plates and rice bowls, Filkins said.
"A lot of people make presents for their parents and grandparents, and they haven't done that since second grade," he added.
For younger gift recipients, Fancy Flights, little angels that fly, are popular gifts, said Cathy Horner, owner of Tadpole Crossing, 101 E. Beaver Ave. Board games such as Cranium and Brainstrain also are being sold for the holidays, she added.
For teenagers, charm bracelets that can have charms added to them are a fashionable gift, Horner said. Charm bracelets are "probably the most popular thing we have right now," she added.
Nittany Quill, 111 S. Fraser St, has been selling boxed stationery, fountain pens, stationery sets with glass pens and journals for the holidays, Manager Jerusha Grosh said.
"We sell a lot of stationery," he said.
