Letter to the Editor
Homophobia present in USG Senate's actions

I am writing in response to the letter written by Rick Smith and Julia Graham, two USG members. I think it is important to point out something about their argument. Whether they consciously believe themselves to be homophobic or not is, unfortunately, unimportant in the situation of USG sponsoring Pride Week monetarily or nominally. What is important is that the root of the problem results from, and perpetuates, homophobia in our campus culture. The idea that an event during Pride Week would be disastrous for senate's credibility is a homophobic, or at least heterosexist one, implying that members of the LGBTA community would present embarrassing material in promotion of equality and acceptance. This implication is not only untrue, but also dangerous in a climate in which many people still feel that LGBTA issues are simply sexual ones. I think that the strongest statement of our student government's credibility would be to stand by its students in their fight for equality.
