Letter to the Editor
One vote doesn't mean Senate is homophobic

It is shameful to see that the Collegian's editorial board decided to print libelous information about members of the USG Senate it its editorial Monday. How the Collegian could call people homophobic based on one single vote regarding funding is absolutely irresponsible. We, along with many other concerned senators, voted against Pride Week funding for a number of reasons, none of which involved any sort of alleged "homophobia."

First of all, there are a number of groups co-sponsoring Pride Week that have lied about program funding in the past. When money was requested for Cuntfest, UPAC was not told of the graphic nature of the performance artist at the event. Unfortunately, these sort of actions create an atmosphere of distrust. How can USG Senate be sure that one of the co-sponsoring organizations hasn't lied again and decided to put on another such event? The sad reality is we can't. Until these groups can prove they can be trusted when requesting funds, they do not deserve a dime.

Also, there are serious concerns about the potential for one of these events to generate negative publicity such as some in the past by these groups.

With USG beginning serious lobbying efforts in Harrisburg, having USG's name on Pride Week if one of the events during the week caused problems would be disastrous for our credibility with legislators, jeopardizing our efforts at reducing tuition.

As the editorial column asked, "what more does senate want?" Well, for starters, perhaps a fairly written Collegian editorial.
