The Town Senator, USG and other student representatives are people with the responsibility of ensuring the best interest of the students. I do not understand why they are hesitant to spend $700 for rape cards.
People in positions of responsibility should always try to understand that sometimes it is important to shift from your stand, no matter how strongly you believe in it, if it is in the larger interest of the community to do so. And this issue is definitely such an issue.
However, it is the attitude of most of the letter writers that has me surprised. I agree that these letters are meant to influence public opinion and mobilize mass support for issues that you believe in, but this can never be a substitute for concrete action. Are we going to let a matter of such importance to the Penn State student community die down?
Seven hundred dollars is not a big amount and certainly not bigger than the enormity of the problem. We cannot let the rape victims suffer because of the lack of such a small amount. I think the need of the hour is for the right-minded students to get together and mobilize this money from amongst the students. We certainly should not keep on waiting for other people to do things that we strongly believe in.
