University must cancel half day of instruction

Tomorrow, the day before Thanksgiving, there is little doubt that not too many students will be reading this page of The Daily Collegian.

There are two major reasons for that. Both because many students will have already started on their trips home for the holiday -- one typically spent with extended families -- and because this paper doesn't print for the partial class day.

For many people, this Thursday means traveling -- sometimes traveling a long way. As always, getting out of class at 2:15 in the afternoon tomorrow can make that horribly inconvenient for most students who, understandably, would like to spend Thursday eating dinner and celebrating with their loved ones.

Most instructors acknowledge this fact and cancel their Wednesday classes so that students can leave if they need to.

Some professors, however, do not cancel classes, leaving students with little option but to skip.

Especially this year, when the process of traveling has become increasingly difficult as a result of added security measures at airlines after Sept. 11. The time to travel has increased and, once again, the point of a partial class day right before Thanksgiving seems a little lost.

After the Joint Committee to Review the University Calendar's proposed calender was publicized last week, many questions about how to structure next year's class schedule will arise in months to come. While the schedule that has been proposed is severely lacking in logic, it does give students the week of Thanksgiving off.

Though the entire week off isn't really necessary for most Penn State students, giving them the day before Thanksgiving, a typical travel day for most is.

So as Penn State rethinks next year's academic calendar, it should take into account the inconvenience of the current partial school-day and the fact that most students don't go to class on that day anyway.

It's elimination from the calendar, especially in light of the events that will make air travel especially time consuming and inconvenient in the years to come is needed.

The university should re-evaluate its system and reduce holiday travel stress.
