I'm appalled by the lack of change in attitude and actions of Americans. Aside from feel-good donations to humanitarian organizations, the mindset of the American people has become more divided and hostile despite the anthem- singing and banner-waving. The United States expects to put out the fire of terrorism with military fire, inadvertently increasing the size of the blaze.
I agree that acts of terrorism are not correctly justified, but if the American perception of justice is to destroy the source of evil, then the U.S. may as well incarcerate the entire human race. In order to fight fire, water must be used and instead of military attacks, understanding. Oppression looks different from the other side. George W. must stop trying to exercise the power of our defense department to appease collective feelings of vengeance. He must set a new standard of understanding.
Most people have adopted the "no-negotiations-with-terrorists" mindset; but then put yourself in the shoes of the "enemy" (who are also human beings). How would you react to the attacks of the American military? Too many humans have lost their lives for reasons that can only be described as the evil of human nature. Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best: "I hate war." But then why are we constantly fighting for peace?
I believe the root is human nature; a natural self-centered view of the world which is abundant in American culture. We should be able to see plainly the effects of vengeance . . . more hate. So why not fight hate with understanding?
