Icers sweep pair from UM-Dearborn

Collegian Staff Writer

Patent pending.

That is the status of the forehand to backhand shift move ACHA D1 Icers forward Glenn Zuck employed to beat Michigan-Dearborn goalie Jason Ryan on a breakaway in the first of the Icers two wins this weekend against the Wolves at home.

Zuck had two goals and an assist in the Icers' 6-2 victory against the Wolves Friday, and forward Bill Downey earned a hat trick in the Icers 9-1 win Saturday.

Zuck's signature shift, which led to his second goal of the game and gave the Icers a 6-2 lead Friday during a four-on-four situation, induced the loudest roar of the night from the near-capacity crowd at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.

"I pull out my primary moves," Zuck said. "Straight to the forehand, pull it to the backhand. I did that all of last year, every breakaway I got. It seemed to work pretty well, so I'm sticking with it."

Icers center Neal Price, who had a goal and two assists Friday, carried the puck down the right side of the ice before he made a nice pass just outside the blue line to spring Zuck for the breakaway.

"We all knew before the season started that Neal Price would be the leader (in points) on the team," said forward Paul Crooker, who had a goal and two assists on the night. "He showed that again. The kid is incredible at passing. You got to score when you're on his line. He's a good step in for losing Alon Eizenman (to graduation)."

Forward Dustin Martin scored two key goals on the night as he gave the Lions 2-1 and 3-2 leads in the second period.

Martin came down the left wing on a two-on-one with Crooker and backhanded a shot past Ryan at the 7:51 mark to give the Icers their first lead of the game.

Martin notched the game-winning goal at 14:07 of the period. Crooker warded off a Wolves' defenseman behind the net before he centered the puck to Martin, who one-timed a shot into the top right corner of the net.

Icers coach Joe Battista said the game was Martin's best all-around effort of the season.

Crooker said the game was the second that he, Martin and Downey had played together as a unit this season. The line skated together this past week in practice.

"We meshed pretty well right away," Crooker said.

Goalie Geoff Beauparlant played solid, and he came up with difficult saves when he had to. Beauparlant made a tremendous stick save with about seven minutes left in the third period that Battista called "Hasek-like", referring to the saves Detroit Red Wings' goaltender Domenic Hasek makes while lying on his back.

In the Icers' dominating victory against the Wolves Saturday, Downey, Zuck and goalie Scott Graham all played exceptional games.

Zuck this time used pinpoint shots into the top corners of the net to score his two goals.

Downey pulled a backhand to forehand shift of his own to score his second goal at 9:16 of the second period. He earned the hat trick later in the period as he swerved around Ryan, who had come out to the top of his crease, and stashed the puck in the right side of the net.

Downey said that the he knew Ryan and Jon Heise, the Wolves goalie who started the match Saturday, often came out of the net. Downey said he wanted to allow the goalies to make the first move and react to their movements.

Graham came up huge when he had to, holding a shutout until Wolves forward Jeff Bancroft scored with 3:25 to play in the third period.

Said Battista: "Lost in this 9-1 game was that Scotty Graham played a hell of a game."
