Men's cross country battles injuries, luck
The Lions finished fifth at NCAA Regionals.

Sometimes it's just not your day.

That is the sentiment the Penn State men's cross country team had to be feeling after leaving Lehigh University with a fifth place finish in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Meet on Saturday.

An injury to sophomore Scott Munro put a damper on the Lions chances, as the last three miles of the race Munro had to hobble home. Munro felt his foot get tight and could not apply any pressure to it. Munro at the time of the injury was near the front of the pack along with Lion teammates seniors Steve Walsh, John McGrorey, and Gregg Davis.

"One thing, Scotty being hurt knocked us back real good," Penn State men's cross country coach Harry Groves said. "He had to go three miles on one leg. When he came by I saw him running way out on the firmest ground and when the race was over I found out about his injury. That kind of shattered the whole thing, because you have to have five guys to have a chance."

Senior Steve Walsh was the Lions top finisher in 17th with a time of 31:17 for the 10,000 meters. He was closely followed by teammates John McGrorey and Gregg Davis, who finished 18th and 19th respectively. Walsh, McGrorey and Davis were separated by just three seconds and they were named to the All Mid-Atlantic Region Team.

"The Princeton guys ran really well, Georgetown ran well, Nova guys ran well, they ran great, and we ran OK," Walsh said. "The difference of us getting up there is not that much, it's just how it panned out."

Sophomore Scott Munro fighting through the foot injury, finished 19 seconds back of Davis at 31:38, which was good enough for 33rd.

"I just wanted to finish the race," Munro said. "I didn't care about my foot. The only thing on my mind was finishing the race. We worked too hard this summer for me to give up."

Finishing up the top five for the Lions in 58th, was junior Josh Loren with a time of 32:04.

Villanova won the meet and earned a spot in the NCAA Championships with a score of 75. Georgetown earned the other automatic bid finishing 15 points behind the Wildcats for second.

Princeton, LaSalle and the Lions rounded out the top five.

Junior Adrian Blincoe and sophomore Ryan Hayden of Villanova took the top two spots individually sparking Villanova, while freshman Rob Koborsi and senior Chris Miltenberg grabbed fourth and fifth to pace the Hoyas. Senior Kevin Doyle of Saint Francis finished third overall.

The Lions season is not over, though; they will be participating in the ICAAAA's in Van Cortland, New York on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Lions were victorious in the race last year.

"We all wanted to go to nationals, but it didn't happen," Walsh said. "One more race to go, the ICAAAA's is still a big meet and hopefully we can go out and defend our title."
