Audiences got their first look at the newest Star Wars prequel, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, this past weekend with a new teaser trailer that's running exclusively in front of Monsters, Inc.
The teaser lasts for less than a minute and contains no dialogue; the only sound is that of Darth Vader's breathing. Brief glimpses of the upcoming film are shown, including a lightsaber-wielding Obi-Wan Kenobi, a suspicious-looking Yoda, and a young Anakin Skywalker embracing Queen Amidala.
Some fans took note of the clip's brevity. "It definitely fulfilled the word 'teaser,' " Peter Diamantopoulos (senior-secondary education) said.
Still, many are pleased with the few glimpses they did manage to see.
"It did a very good job of incorporating old (Star Wars) elements into the new ones," said John Boggs (senior-film and video). Although the excitement level isn't what it was for Episode I, "it was Star Wars and it was still awesome," he said.
Attack is the second of three prequels, all of which take place before the original Star Wars movies and depict the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker, who is destined to one day become Darth Vader. The second prequel will feature the future parents of Luke and Leia Skywalker falling in love, as well as the infamous Clone Wars.
The general consensus among students is that Attack of the Clones looks more promising than the first prequel.
"I think this one looks more interesting," said Brian Lorenc (sophomore-information sciences and technology), comparing Attack of the Clones to its predecessor, The Phantom Menace.
On the other hand, Pedro Bolivar (sophomore-business administration) wasn't as impressed with the trailer, citing that it seemed too mushy. "I don't think it looks better (than Episode I)" he said.
Most, however, agree with Kevin Roberts (senior-film and video), who thinks the new movie looks great. "There's a guy with a red sword and I want to know who he is," Roberts said, referring to a mysterious character shown in the teaser trailer.
Perhaps he'll find out in the new trailer, which will have a runtime of over two minutes. According to a press release the new trailer will contain dialogue and more never-before-seen footage from the upcoming film. The second trailer will be distributed with copies of Harry Potter, due out in a week.
