With a week full of solid practice under its belt, the Penn State women's soccer team looked to avenge its loss against Ohio State on Oct. 26.
The target George Mason.
The damage a 6-0 shutout.
Penn State increased its record to 15-3-1 (8-1-1, Big Ten) yesterday in a game which saw all of Penn State's starters in action except Leigh Hamilton who is still out after sustaining an injury against Iowa on Oct. 12. George Mason's record fell to 7-10-1.
"It was a confidence booster for us," Penn State coach Paula Wilkins said. "It's a good rhythm for us to get into heading into the (Big Ten) tournament."
The Lions scored three goals before going into the half, the first coming from sophomore Heidi Drummond off of a Christie Welsh assist. Welsh beat her man down the left side of the field, rounded the corner and passed the ball to Drummond who finished it off for the Lions first goal of the day.
Drummond however, would not be stopped there. She scored her second, and the team's second goal of the day, off an assist by sophomore Joanna Lohman.
Welsh netted two goals for Penn State, the first coming in the first half off a header. Stephanie Smith assisted the goal. Welsh's goal took the Lions into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
"We did pretty well," Welsh said. "They gave us a lot of room and we took advantage of the situation."
Penn State came out fired up in the second half as well.
Lohman added her own unassisted goal to put the Lions up 4-0. And Welsh added her second goal of the day off a Drummond assist. The ball was served into Drummond at about 20 yards out. Welsh received the cross and slammed the ball into the upper right hand side of the goal. After 66 games, Welsh has upped her goal count to 65 goals and 33 assists, leaving her in first place in the Big Ten in both categories.
The Lions final goal of the game came from Sophia Hiler off a Christie Welsh assist.
Although the win ends the Lions regular season, the team won't have much of a break before beginning their postseason in the Big Ten Tournament. The tournament begins Thursday with No. 1 seed Penn State taking on No. 8 seed Northwestern. In regular season play the Nittany Lions beat the Wildcats 1-0.
"We know what we have to do heading into the tournament," Welsh said. "We can't take advantage of any of these games. It's going to be hard. It's going to be tough."
