When the Icers mix their strong puckhandling, passing and shooting skills with their propensity to dish out ferocious hits, the opposition is in danger.
The Towson hockey team (4-5-1) relearned this lesson this weekend, as the Icers dominated the Tigers to the tune of 6-0 on Friday and 8-2 on Saturday.
In front of a near capacity crowd Friday at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion, the Icers (5-0-1) out-worked the Tigers and showed their superior skill to earn the victory.
"We forechecked so well tonight," Icers coach Joe Battista said. "We penned them up in their end for long periods of time."
Forward Neal Price, who had two goals and one assist for the game, said, "We're hitting on all cylinders right now."
The Icers matched the Tigers hit-for-hit in a game saturated with fierce body checks and penalties. For the game, the two teams combined for more than 100 penalty minutes.
Left wing Justin DePretis said the last time Penn State played Towson, the Tigers outworked the Lions and Penn State had to comeback to tie Towson. Friday's game was a different story.
"We knew they were a feisty, physical team," DePretis said.
"We stepped up and came to the challenge. I think it was a big thing for us. We know we can play with that kind of team now."
Center Paul Sealock registered the game-winning goal at 5:26 of the second period as he burst down the right side of the ice and put the puck in the top-left corner of the net, beating Towson goalie Ryan Warfel with a sniper-like wrist shot.
Price tallied a shorthanded goal to make the score 2-0 at the 10:26 mark of the period as he received a nice centering pass from forward Bill Downey and one-timed a shot past Warfel.
On a goal similar to one left wing Joe McCardle scored last weekend against Villanova, Justin DePretis made the score 3-0 on a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play. Right wing Glenn Zuck passed out of the left corner to Price at the right post.
Price, who could have scored himself, then dished to DePretis in front of the net, who one-timed the puck past Warfel.
Price said Battista told the Icers that they must have poise in shooting against Warfel because he goes right down to the ice to try to make saves.
"I got the puck and saw (Warfel) starting to slide over," Price said.
"I saw Justin coming down the slot and he was wide open. I just gave him the puck."
DePretis, Price and forward Kevin Jaeger concluded the scoring for the Icers. Penn State out-shot Towson 51-17 for the game.
With about three minutes to play in the third period, all 10 position players on the ice engaged in a wrestling match near the Penn State bench. Towson forward Connor Doyle was the most aggressive participant in the scrum as he threw a few punches at an Icer, even after a linesman tried to stop the brawl.
Doyle received a five-minute major and a 10 minute misconduct.
In Penn State's 8-2 victory Saturday, McCardle, who missed Friday's game because of a job interview, scored four goals in a game for the second weekend in a row.
McCardle notched four goals against Villanova last weekend.
"These were two impressive wins versus a very solid team," Battista said.
