Lady Ruggers all over American in big win
The women's rugby team ended its regular season on the strength of Meg O'Melia.

Talk about ending the regular season with a bang.

Behind constant offensive pressure and a newfound weapon of team speed, the Penn State Lady Ruggers destroyed the American University Eagles 125-0 on Saturday. Back Meg O'Melia was the offensive star of the game, scoring seven tries for the Lady Ruggers in the last game of the fall regular season.

"Meg is our best all-around back," head coach Pete Steinberg said. "She can play any position on the field, and today was her day."

"It feels excellent to score so much, but I just wish the team could have given us more opposition," said O"Melia. "I think that today we came in and really played Penn State rugby."

Twelve different Lady Ruggers put the ball in the tryzone for 21 scores. Other multiple scorers included Katie Gloyer, who had two tries, and team captain Claudia Knudsen, who scored three.

Several scores came directly off the kickoff. O'Melia, Leigh Prpich, Katie Gloyer, and Knudsen were all able to break away from the pack and run down the field past Eagle defenders nearly untouched to score at least once.

Other times, Lady Ruggers ran down the field, flying by the defenses after catching passes from teammates, to set up scores.

"I'm very proud of how we played today," Knudsen said.

"The outcome feels good, but we can't get too comfortable heading into the spring."

The win guarantees the Lady Ruggers the No. 1 seed in the spring MARFU tournament because of their unbeaten league and regular season record.

Their only two losses came in exhibition against professional squads. The high seeding puts the team in a good position to win the MARFU championship and then compete for the national title.

This upcoming winter practice season will be of extreme importance for the team.

The team, though showing better discipline in tackling and keeping the ball in rucks, will need to continue work on those components of their game, as well as their scrums and lineouts.

Combined with their 29-0 win over the Juniata Eagles Friday night in non-league action, many inexperienced Lady Ruggers were given a chance to perform against A-side competition over the weekend.

Among those who impressed were Mary Creighton, Christie Bird, Prpich, and Gloyer.

"We needed to work on our depth on the field," O'Melia said. "We put in a couple fill-ins with the new players, and still our level of play did not go down. It's great to have some new scoring options."

Steinberg agreed and added, "This is the first time in awhile that we have some real team depth. It's important not only for the playoffs, but also because so many on the team are seniors."

After a brief time of rest and rehabilitation, the team will spend the next three months in practice before continuing their quest for the national title in mid-March.
