'Heart and Souls' makes for a good study break

Collegian Staff Writer

Looking for a movie to relieve the stress caused by midterms? A simple cute and funny film to distract you from your studies for a little bit?

Then my suggestion to you is Ron Underwood's 1993 film Heart and Souls starring Robert Downey Jr., Elisabeth Shue, Tom Sizemore, Kyra Sedgwick, Charles Grodin and Alfre Woodard.

The movie starts off a little somber as Sizemore, Sedgwick, Grodin, and Woodard's characters die in a serious bus accident.

But don't worry, it gets happier, I promise.

At the same time as their deaths, a baby is born and these four lost souls are attached to this child for life, yet they have no idea why.

This child grows up to be Thomas (Downey), a man who doesn't have time to fall in love and settle down because his job is his life.

Thomas also has a serious fear of people leaving him if he gets too close to them, due to the fact that these souls were forced to stop speaking to him and appearing to him as a child.

This leads to problems between Thomas and his girlfriend (Shue).

The souls discover that the reason they are attached to him is so that he can help them fulfill some of their unfinished business from before they died, and also so that they can help him with his problems. Unfortunately there isn't much time left until they are taken away from him, running the risk of being unable to take care of their unfinished business.

Thomas and the four souls help one another to realize the importance of living each day to the fullest and never allowing regrets to control your life.

They also teach that it's never too late to right a wrong from the past.

Yes, it may seem like your average feel-good movie.

But the fine performances — sometimes dramatic, sometimes comical — and the interesting plot twists make it anything but typical. In fact, it is quite extraordinary.

After seeing this movie, you'll have a renewed sense of the human spirit.
