Bands ready to 'pledge allegiance' to metal

Collegian Staff Writer

The Bryce Jordan Center will rock tonight with the sounds of metal and theatrical stage shows.

‘Pledge of Allegiance’
  • Time: 6 p.m.
  • Date: today
  • Place: The Bryce Jordan Center
  • The Pledge of Allegiance Tour, the newest musical festival to follow the lines of the wildly popular Ozzfest and Family Values Tour, comes to Penn State starting at 6 p.m. and features four metal bands including Slipknot, System of a Down, No One and American Head Charge.

The tour was originally named for the dedicated metal fans that devote their loyalty to the national recording bands.

Slipknot, the Des Moines, Iowa-based band, headlines the show. Donning masks and using number monikers to denote each band member, Slipknot puts on a show reminiscent of a Halloween haunted house on stage.

The band recently released its second album, Iowa, and has been touring to bring the music to the fans.

"The album is a pivotal part of us: where we're going and where we're going to take all of you," said No. 6 in an internet interview. "By accepting it again, you have to be careful what you wish for. The musicality is the first and foremost thing people look for in Slipknot, and I don't think they're going to be let down with that, but I think violently and exhaustingly people are going to be taken to a different level than they've ever experienced."

No One, based in Chicago, released its first album in June and displays a sound similar to Korn, Alice in Chains and Pantera.

American Head Charge brings a similar sound — one reminiscent of post-Korn era bands.

Perhaps the surprise of the show could be the up-and-coming band from Los Angeles, System of a Down. Its current album, Toxicity, is No. 14 on the Billboard Charts and peaked at No. 1 last month.

Band members Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan blend a mix of underground thrash metal, melodic harmonies and folk music from their native country of Armenia to create a unique hybrid of traditional music and metal.

Famed producer Rick Rubin, known for his work with Public Enemy, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, produced the band's newest album.

"Serj has become a tremendous singer," said Rubin in an internet interview. "There is a wealth of vocal melody on Toxicity. You've got Serj and Daron singing these beautiful melancholic melodies which have really expanded the vision of what System is. Toxicity has all of the qualities that kids loved from the first album, plus this tremendous musical growth."

The band is best known for its single "Chop Suey!," which has received regular playtime on alternative music stations and on MTV. Other songs on the album include a political dialogue on the state of prisons in America, "Prison Song."
