NRT prepares to 'improv' at HUB, Forum Building

Collegian Staff Writer

Making the audience laugh at type-scripted jokes can be easy with timing, but without the safety net of a script it takes some special skill.

Tonight, the actors of No Refund Theatre will have to prove they can create laughs all by themselves.

"We will give them a chance to prove they're funny," NRT's Nate Kushner (junior-English) said.

NRT will present a double dose of improvisational theater this weekend.

The "improv" will be held at 10 p.m. tonight at the HUB-Robeson Center's LateNight Student Organization Hot Spot and again at 8 p.m. tomorrow in 111 Forum Building.

The improv is taking place both nights because of the movement of NRT's production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead until January, due to a family emergency of one of the cast members.

Jeremy Owens (junior-physics), who will be directing the postponed play, is the MC of the improv event.

He'll be keeping the comedy of the evenings on track and the situations a secret from the actors.

Owen said improv is basically what the name says: theater and comical situations acted out on the spot, without previous knowledge of the exact situations.

"Improv theater is great because it is random and can be completely off-the-wall." Owens said.

"It's all about a bunch of people trying to make the audience laugh their asses off," he added.

In between two sets of improv at the HUB Hot Spot, Kushner will be performing his humorous songs.

Said Owens: "He plays folky-type music. Him and his guitar, he plays humorous songs. It is less about the music and more about the humor, though."

Owens said the event will feature games played by the actors, similar to those of the improvisational TV show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Kushner agreed with Owens on the similarity to Whose Line Is It Anyway?, but mentioned that NRT will have some games that the popular TV show does not.

The actors involved will be people who have already expressed interest within NRT.

The NRT actors have been rehearsing this week so that Owens can figure out which games will work well with the people involved.

"It lets the actors get warmed up, so they can get used to me throwing stuff at them," Owens said.
