Letter to the Editor
DSS speaker discussion open to every student

Those who read the editorials everyday should be very familiar with what has been being said with the USG/UPAC/DSS situation. I hope I can shed some light on the issue. As a student I had an opportunity last spring to go to a meeting in which there was going to be a brainstorming session over potential DSS speakers for this year.

Any student could have attended this meeting and given his or her opinions. Some members of the College Democrats and the president of the Young Americans for Freedom attended. How do I know the YAF president was there? He announced it. He said very quickly and very to the point that he was there only to persuade the DSS to get one speaker — Ben Stein. He mentioned no other names during the entire meeting and he never spoke up once when I suggested Janet Reno or Gloria Steinem.

With all of this said, what's the problem? Various students were able to speak their minds. However, to Mr. McKinney who said, "the DSS has been used by this school to shove its own view of diversity down the throats of the students," if you are to accuse anyone of shoving views on anybody it should be me, not Penn State and certainly not USG President Justin Zartman.

So all of you that have a problem with the liberal speakers, quit placing blame on PSU and Zartman. If anyone should be blamed it should be me and the only thing I did was voice an opinion in an appropriate forum.

College Democrats Secretary
