Some have stated that they understand what it's like to be hated because of race or religion and then they try to tell you how to cope with it. I cringe when I hear people say it's OK for Smock to bash Muslims, because it's his First Amendment right.
Do you really know what's like to be hated? Have you ever stared into the eyes of racial or religious hate? Have you stared into those eyes and saw the repulsion, or listened to those voices and heard the psychoticness, or watched those bodies in fear of physical harm? Have you had other people join in on the public humiliation of you?
Have you wanted to fight back knowing that it would mean you would be up against six other people?
And also knowing that if you act, you are defying everything you stand for: your values, your morals and your religion. And when you look around for help, all you see are the sympathetic faces of those who are too scared to stand up for you.
Do you have to re-live the same event every time you hear of a racist or religious attack? The event stays with you -- it's not something you forgive and forget or something you just shut out of your mind.
Don't tell me how I'm supposed to feel or that I should just get over it. Don't tell me it's OK because it's his First Amendment right to hate me.
