NEWS

Within the next three weeks, Ramadan, the Muslim fasting and restraining month, will begin, and some Muslim Penn State students want the bombing to end during this sacred time.

At least 15 Penn State graduate students, along with a number of their children, were left homeless last night when a fire broke out in the Graduate Circle Apartments.

Some students know how to spend their 21st birthdays in style — with a group of close friends, a party, a makeover and a camera crew following their every moves.

Curious heads glimpsed behind at a discreet camera crew as it entered Crowbar Friday. Attentive ears inched closer to the entrance door, listening for someone to mention three letters. Is that MTV?

Friendly competition was the mood this Saturday as a group of about 200 Penn State and Ohio State University students came together to volunteer throughout Centre County.

The chilly weather yesterday morning did not deter students and community members from running to help cure cancer. The first-ever THON 5K Run/Walk boasted an 800-runner turnout.

Animal lovers at Penn State have the chance to get a glimpse of the veterinary field and do some volunteer work by joining the Pre-Veterinary Club.

Voting for Homecoming king and queen begins today online and at various locations around campus.

Students will get a chance tonight to question the candidates running in next week's local elections. Each of the candidates for State College Borough Council from the Democratic and Republican parties will be present.

Of the 53 reports of suspicious material in Centre County, no anthrax has been found, the Centre County Board of Commissioners said in a press release.

SPORTS

Joe Paterno did it. The legendary coach has finally turned a corner with his Penn State football team with back-to-back Big Ten wins. Oh, and the 74-year-old coach also passed Paul "Bear" Bryant on the all-time Division I-A wins list.

Each and every week, Joe Paterno says in his postgame media conference that big plays were a huge factor in the outcome of that Saturday's contest. Whoever makes the most wins the game.

You ached to say it when he threw the pass to Tony Johnson for another score. But when he chased down an errant snap and fired for a 31-yard gain, it could finally be said: Zack Mills is something special.

My opinion: Brian McDonald

Surrounded by friends and family after Saturday's remarkable win, it appeared that Joe Paterno was finally allowing himself to revel in the moment.

Before Friday's women's soccer game against Ohio State, Penn State coach Paula Wilkins called the team the "biggest offensive threat in the Big Ten." That couldn't have been truer.

Coaches often talk about strong senior leadership as being important to their teams' successes. The No. 13 Nittany Lions field hockey team received strong senior leadership from their co-captains Meredith Shulzitski and Kiley Kulina yesterday in the Lions' 3-0 victory at Indiana.

The No. 24 Lions (10-3-1) helped their chances of making the NCAA Tournament this weekend by defeating both Hartwick and American University. Friday's win was the team's third shutout in a row.

After the football team pulled out a 29-27 win, "tough act to follow" was a monumental understatement for the women's volleyball players. What they provided was the perfect nightcap for one of the biggest days in Penn State sports history.

Last Saturday, for every Penn State kill, the Wisconsin Badgers replied with kills by Sherisa Livingston. The 2000 first team All-American was the pinnacle of the Badger's offense, and in the first game it showed.

Some days everything just seems to go your way and nobody can stop you. This was the case for the Penn State Icers this weekend as they notched two dominating victories against Villanova and Kent State.

It's tough to win in any sport playing a man short, but in cross-country if you have just one unproductive spot the team's performance can be ruined.

It was good that the Nittany Lions improved on last year's eighth place finish by finishing tied for seventh. But it was not good enough when the Lions had aspirations of a top five finish entering the weekend.

OPINIONS

Congrats, Coach
