Lions end season on 8-game win streak

Collegian Staff Writer

Coaches often talk about strong senior leadership as being important to their teams' successes. In both their attitude and play on the field, strong senior leadership is key for good teams.

The No. 13 Nittany Lions field hockey team (11-6, 3-3 Big Ten) received strong senior leadership from their co-captains Meredith Shulzitski and Kiley Kulina yesterday, as Shulzitski scored a goal and Kulina had two goals and an assist in the Lions' 3-0 victory at Indiana (1-15, 0-6 Big Ten). The game was the final regular season game for Shulzitski, Kulina and senior Marci Ginder.

The Lions now ride an eight-game winning streak into this weekend's Big Ten tournament.

Shulzitski notched the game-winning goal with 15:38 to play in the first half as she took a pass from Kulina off a Penn State corner, according to an Indiana field hockey press release. The forward shot the ball past Indiana goalie Molly Pulkrabek who went down before Shulzitski fired the ball.

Kulina made the score 2-0 less than a minute later, as she took a crossing pass from midfielder Kelly Larson and beat Pulkrabek from the right side of the field.

Penn State dominated possession in both halves of play as they out-shot the Hoosiers 25-1 and out-cornered them 13-1 for the game.

"We didn't allow as many corners today," Indiana coach Amy Robertson said in the press release. "Today was the least amount of corners we have given up to a ranked opponent this season, and that is a reflection on the way our defense played today."

Indiana back Akila Jones also said she was proud of how her team played.

"We played one heck of a game today," Jones said. "I am very proud of our players, we really stepped it up and hung with (Penn State)."

Robertson agreed, saying, "I am very proud of the way our team played today. Penn State is one of the best all-around teams we have played this season."

Kulina put in her second goal with just under 34 minutes to play in the second half, as she beat a diving Pulkrabek.

Kulina had 14 shots on the day for the Lions. Shulzitski was second on the Lions with five shots.

Back Heather Conroy did not play as she rested her sore Achilles' tendon.

All the statistics pointed to Penn State domination, though Hoosiers' forward Brooke Magers thought her team played well to limit the Lions to three goals.

"We played our best game today," Magers said. "Penn State is a phenomenal team. They have been beating people 5-0 and 6-0, we really held them down today."
