Letter to the Editor
Animal crime article inappropriate as news

Recently, The Daily Collegian featured an inappropriate article. The article about the man attempting intercourse with a horse was sensationalist journalism that belonged in The National Enquirer or in the police blotter.

How can someone write about this incident with journalist viewpoints? To describe the color of the stool the deranged man stood on when attempting to have sex from behind the horse is beyond erroneous.

More disturbing is the adjacent article about "Purple Ribbon Day" being considerably shorter. I understand that the article about the demented man's unsuccessful attempt to have sex with the horse is more "eye catching" than some ribbon trying to bring hope towards domestic violence victims and prevent future attacks. However, the Collegian's job is to report relevant news to the students.

A very young girl was present when the man tried his repulsive act. Would it be OK to trivialize the story with neutrality if this man attempted sex with the girl?

On a related note, I was disappointed there was no coverage of Carol Adams' presentation: "The Sexual Politics of Meat." With a reporter present, the oppression of women interlinked with the abominable plight animals suffer at the hands of humans becomes apparent. The problem was compounded because there were not any Collegian reporters at this indubitably truthful presentation.

With this constructive criticism, I challenge The Daily Collegian to report news on campus pertaining to the student body.
