Letter to the Editor
Smock purports hate, should be forced away

This week, a plague has come to our campus and his name is Brother Jed Smock. My first question is why is this man allowed to be here?

He stands outside of Willard, making derogatory remarks about everyone. In the one hour I stood and listened to him, he referred to a Muslim student as Satan, claimed he does not sin, degraded a young woman because she had a tongue ring, solicited "who here is a virgin" from the crowd and followed by calling us "whore-minded Pagans."

He also made derogatory remarks about Muslim wives and women until a student asked him to watch his language. Moving past the ridicule he hands out so lightly, why are we, as a university, standing for this hate speech?

Some would say that he is protected under the First Amendment, and we must let him speak. I say, as students, this is our campus and the policies and procedures the university establishes are to protect us. Hate speech is what got us into the same situation last year. Smock is an embarrassment to the Christian community and to the university. If the administration refuses to support its own policies, we, as students, must take a stand, make our voices be heard and reclaim our university.
