Can't go wrong
Paterno is confident in both Senneca and Mills

Collegian Staff Writer

Enough about Matt Senneca and Zack Mills already. Both are quality quarterbacks, both deserve to play and it doesn't matter which one starts against Ohio State.

In a nutshell, that's what coach Joe Paterno has said all along about the "quarterback controversy" at Penn State. And that's what the two play callers, Senneca and Mills, have also been saying.

The two players have had conversations about the two competing for the starting job and have agreed whoever is named the starter deserves to play. Both have decided whatever is best for the Nittany Lions is the best for them.

"He came up to me and said no matter what happens, there's no hard feelings," Mills said. "There hasn't been any hard feeling between us."

Against Northwestern, Senneca got knocked out of the game with less than two minutes to play and Mills was right there to lead Penn State down the field for the winning score. The freshman calmly came in the game, connected with wide receiver Bryant Johnson multiple times and then hit tailback Eric McCoo for the winning touchdown.

Senneca has been limited in the Lions first five games because of injuries, but against the Wildcats the junior showed he can be a quality contributor, once again putting the heat on Paterno to name the starter.

But Paterno doesn't seem to mind that he has two quarterbacks that are deserving of a starting spot. He doesn't feel any pressure to name either of them as the solid starter.

"You guys think I am trying to be evasive about that question, but I am not, both of them have done well," Paterno said Tuesday. "Zack Mills really did an outstanding, extraordinary job to come in there right off the bench in that kind of a clutch situation and get done what he got done."

In the next sentence, Paterno added, "We wouldn't have been in that position if Matt hadn't played a strong game."

Tomorrow against Ohio State, many things might be up in the air for the Penn State offense. Will the Power I be the offense of choice for the Lions? Will wide receiver Eddie Drummond return to the backfield, where he was successful against Northwestern? Will Mills see more playing time after leading the Lions to its first victory of the season?

"We confide in both of our quarterbacks," Johnson said. "We believe both of them are capable of getting the job done."

Senneca suffered a mild concussion after Wildcats linebacker Napoleon Harris leveled him and was limited in practice earlier in the week. He might still feel some of the after effects against the Buckeyes, and if he does, Mills will be ready.

Although Paterno hasn't been a fan of the two-quarterback system in the past, with two quarterbacks with the talent of Senneca and Mills, the coach can't go wrong. If it's Senneca the right-hander or Mills, the freshman left-hander, the quarterback spot at Penn State is pretty solid.

"We have a good quarterback situation," Paterno said. "I am not sure what I am going to do with the quarterbacks. It is not a big deal for me."
