Censuring Zartman reduces USG opinions
I'm writing in regards to an article that appeared in yesterday's Collegian. USG Senate's censuring of USG President Justin Zartman is exemplary of Penn State's Student Government's biggest pitfall. Zartman and USG Vice President Amanda Hudnall have been elected by the entire voting student body. This means that they are the ultimate representatives of the students. While it is wrong and offensive to senators to say that the president represents students more effectively, it is true that the president represent the students more fully. Most important is the issue of elected representatives being prevented from expressing their beliefs. Despite the irrelevant wording of the USG's governing documents, nothing should prevent the USG president from acting on behalf of the best interests of Penn State students. I urge USG senators to continue to express their opinions regarding UPAC, but never deny the president of the undergraduate student body at University Park that same right. Spend more time creating positive change than attacking and trying to quiet those who disagree with you, and the whole campus community will benefit.
Matt Roan
Former USG president and town senator
