This former farmer's college will get a little taste of its roots in the form of some "fowl play" when Jimmie's Chicken Shack performs tomorrow night in the HUB Alumni Hall. The show will open with Rustic Overtones taking the stage at 10 p.m.
This show is the third in a series of rock concerts sponsored by LateNight-Penn State. John Harlow, director of the program, said the organization is still working on one or two more shows for this semester. LateNight-Penn State also plans on scheduling more concerts in the Spring Semester on account of the high student interest in the program.
Harlow said students have asked LateNight-Penn State workers about getting their favorite bands to perform. In light of this, the organization plans to formulate an official way to accumulate student suggestions at tomorrow night's show and use that information to make decisions about future concerts.

Jimmie’s Chicken Shack
Time: 10 p.m. Date: tomorrow Place: HUB Alumni Hall |
Jimmie's Chicken Shack is no stranger to the area, performing at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., a few times previously.
When the band came most recently in 1999, the band featuring Jimi HaHa (vocals, guitar), Dave "Double D" Dowling (guitar), Derrick Dorsey (bass), and Mike Sipple (drums) was promoting its third release Bring Your Own Stereo. That CD also spawned one of the band's biggest radio hits, "Do Right."
Currently, the band is playing scattered shows to test out new material that is planned to appear on its next CD.
Dowling said the band is looking to start recording in the early months of 2002 and so far has about 25 new songs recorded as demos with more in the works. A full-fledged tour will be scheduled after that album is finished, but for now the band is just playing isolated venues to see how the audiences take to the new material.
Each member of Jimmie's Chicken Shack is also working on solo projects, but as Dowling said, no one is looking to have those take the focus off the band as a whole. He assured that the solo work is merely just a way to keep everyone creative and a little busy.
"It's constantly work, but fun work," Dowling said.
Jimmie's Chicken Shack first formed in Annapolis, Md., in 1992 and began building a local following in and around the area.
Success found the band with the release of its sophomore effort, Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope, and its hit single, "High."
Starting the show are Maine natives Rustic Overtones who are promoting their major label debut, Viva Nueva. Tomorrow's show also marks another time the band has performed on the same bill with Jimmie's Chicken Shack. The two played together numerous times in the past, Dowling said.
The band has become notorious for its explosive live show, drawing in fans during its extensive touring which has averaged about 200 shows per year.Touting its mix of rock and soul, the band draws on many influences to create the eclectic sound and all of them have found a place both at its concerts and on the new CD.
Though the show begins at 10 p.m., students with ID+ cards will be allowed to enter the HUB Alumni Hall at 9:30 p.m.
