I attended the October 16 Graduate Student Association open floor discussion concerning the graduate student unionization drive.
As a result of this meeting, which primarily represented unionization supporters, I felt obliged to address the graduate student body.
As a result of this campaign, no facts were presented that demonstrated how unionization would increase our educational satisfaction or how it could (or has, in the case of universities who have implemented similar unions) influence the university community.
No facts were presented detailing the direct costs of unionization upon every graduate student as far as dues, FICA exemptions, or student versus employee status.
This meeting demonstrated that the organizers of this union drive are utilizing an emotionally charged campaign devoid of facts to convince us that our current status of living which includes free tuition towards obtaining an advanced degree while earning a stipend could be better.
The purpose of this letter is to report the overwhelming absence of evidence that the main supporters presented to convince other students that unionization would be beneficial to the university community as a whole.
