Letter to the Editor
Local produce cheaper, good for local business

I would like to respond to the letter by Matthew Baran about the benefits of shopping at local farmers' markets. His letter overlooks the availability of produce at area grocery stores for a reasonable price.

Yes, it is healthier to consume produce than easy-cheese. But there is no reason to assume that produce is healthier when bought from a local farmer rather than from a supermarket. Both offer organically grown fruits and vegetables. As for the non-organic selections, there is no guarantee that local farmers do not use chemicals and pesticides just like supermarket growers do.

True, a visit to the farmers' market will boost the local economy. However, does it not boost the local economy to shop at local grocery stores? These stores provide employment for many people in this area. And, compared to the farmers' market, the produce at supermarkets is much cheaper. So, one's money will go farther, benefiting even more people.

If farmers' markets and local growers want to supply this region with fresh produce, perhaps they could first supply us with reasonable prices. It is outrageous to offer produce that is only marginally better than the supermarket as prices that may be four times as high.
